• Successful 2010 CWA!

This year's 150th Hereford National Show was a huge success for us once again. The week began with the First Lady Classic where OVHF 69T Wildfire 10W was named Grand Champion Polled Hereford Female. In the open show SSAL Mercedes 14X was awarded a red ribbon in her respective class, OVHF 167U MS Carlson 8X was third in class and OVHF 167U Duchess 2X was fifth in class. The female division of the 150th Show was exceptional and we were very proud of our results with our four head! We enjoyed talking to old friends from across Canada and the US as well as making many new ones. As we all rest up from a week at CWA we now look ahead to Denver (Frank, Andree, Jill and Cole will be attending), Regina Bull Sale and our new calf crops!

• First Birthday Celebration!

Danika celebrated her First Birthday on Saturday the 30th along with all her family. She enjoyed her Dora the Explorer theme party but most of all the cake! She was great entertainment and as you can see it did not take long for her to enjoy the cake. Since Halloween was the very next day, Danika dressed up for her first trick or treat as a cow.

The first snow storm has already hit us however we have been blessed with extremely nice weather for the last week or so. We are busy getting ready for winter and have been working each day with the Agribition cattle. Jill just returned from the Toronto Royal which was a walk down memory lane for her. She enjoyed catching up with all our fellow cattle breeders as well numerous college friends. Jill and Cole are also working on getting their showstring ready for Agribition in a couple of weeks.

• Thank You for Another Succesful Sale!
This past Thanksgiving weekend OVHF and Six South Acres once again had a great sale. A big thank you to all our buyers who purchased our female calves. We would like to thank the following buyers for their support; Medonte Highlands Polled Herefords from Ontario, AXA Polled Herefords (Alan Marshall) from New Brunswick (purchased 2 heifers) and Harvie Ranching from Alberta. We know that our buyers will be pleased with their purchases since they were our top heifers from the heart of our herd. Our sale this year averaged $3,667.92 and we look forward to offering the same OVHF and SSAL quality animals that we are known for next year.

Now that we are well rested from our trip to AB we are focusing on our show cattle for Agribition. Watch for our Harvie Traveler, Harvie Ricochet and OVHF Universal progeny in a months time!

• Sunny Prairies
It has been awhile since I had updated our News since it has only been rain, rain and more rain for many weeks! Our harvest and working with the cattle has been stopped due to the excessive moisture that has plagued us since the Spring! Last Saturday the sun decided to come out and we now are into our fourth day of harvest. We had to buy a grain cart in order to get the product off the field which proved to be challenge when many farmers were searching for one at the same time. Dad and Curtis spent a morning taking off the dual tires off the tractor so that we could fit beside the combines. I took a picture of the back of the yard where we store all our product just after my father in-law Dave had tried to break it up so that it may dry. The Weather Network stated that we had average rainfall this year in SK which is very hard to believe when you see our pics since Spring.

We have been working hard on our 4 sale lots for the Harvie Ranching & Friends sale coming up Thanskgivi ng weekend. The females look fantastic and are our best group of heifer calves that we have ever consigned to date. We look forward to seeing everyone next weekend at the sale and if you have any questions feel free to contact us! My last picture is of Danika and her dog Mac this past weekend. They both were enjoying the sun and warmth that had returned to the prairies as well.

• A Friendly Lunch
We had the pleasure of hosting our friends from Ontario at the Avonlea Farm on Thursday August 19th for lunch and a viewing of the OVHF and Six South Acres Ltd cattle. Wally & Fern Pugh, Burt & Nancy Grundy and Casey & Jill Van Kessel stopped in to see our sale and show cattle for this upcoming Fall. We had many laughs (pictured is Casey showing us his best "ASSet") and truly enjoyed showing our visitors the Avonlea Farm. Curtis and Frank explained to our friends about the topography and crops that characterize our homes. Andree served a beautiful lunch that we all truly appreciated after working up our appetites looking at cattle. We invite anyone who would like to drop in for a viewing of the cattle to give us a call anytime since we love having visitors!

• Fierce Storms In The Area
During the past week some fierce storms have been rolling into the Avonlea and Milestone area. Frank and Andree recorded in one single storm at least 3 inches of rain! Curtis was able to capture the following pictures of the nasty lightning and beautiful rainbows that can be seen after the storms. We hope that the rain quits soon so that we can move on to harvest soon!

• Frank & Andree Travel to Ottawa
Frank and Andree had a fantastic trip to Ottawa at the beginning of August where they had a chance to visit family and friends. They enjoyed getting back to the Ottawa Valley to see Frank's mom Mary McNeely who at 95 years old is as fit as a fiddle! Andree's sister Francine and brother in-law Laurent had a big party for all the family one night while they visited. They enjoyed fresh corn, refreshments and lots of stories! They also had a chance to visit some of their fellow Hereford breeders that week also. Pictured are Graham Green of Abby Hill Farms; Robert, Betty & Doug Meredith of Bet-Ann Farms and Nancy & Burt Grundy of NBG Farms. Frank and Andree enjoyed touring the herds and of course the wonderful hospitality of our good friends.

• Avonlea Farm Shows Its Patriotism!
The Canadian and Saskatchewan Roughriders Flags were waving proudly on Thursday the 29th of July! Andree & Frank are helping their local town of Avonlea in the Riderville competition being held across Saskatchewan. They also helped out by weeding and caring for the flower beds that greet all visitors that enter the town. I captured these pictures of the Avonlea farm as we prepared for a day of clipping and picture taking. Even though it was humid and hot we were able to get our mission for the day accomplished even though Dad and I were exhausted by the end of it! The OVHF Farm is looking beautiful with its new fencing, trees, flowers, pelicans and of course flags! Feel free to drop in for a visit anytime!

• Congratulations Junior Hereford Members!
Jill and Andree flew to Quebec this past weekend to attend the Junior Hereford Bonanza. Jill had the pleasure of being the showmanship judge on the Friday for this awesome show! Jill was impressed by the quality of the showmanship which made her job that much harder! Congratulations to Sarah Darraugh of Ontario for being named Champion showman and Meghan Black from the Maritimes for being named Reserve Champion. Andree and Jill had alot of fun visiting with everyone and watching the open show. Bonanza next year will be in Saskatoon Saskatchewan which will be a fantastic event once again!

• July Begins
The first week of July has been busy with cattle shows and cutting hay. Kerry, leader of the Milestone Beef Club, was away for four days helping out the 4-H club who were competing at the Weyburn 4-H Regional Show. The 15 club steers averaged $2.55 per pound which was up from last year's sale. It was a busy time however the 4-H'ers had fun! Pictured are the members of our club. We look forward to Danika being old enough to show her very own Hereford steer! Luckily Andree was able to look after Danika while Kerry was away each day. Pictured is Frank and Danika looking at Andree's flowers. Frank and Curtis have been busy cutting and baling hay for this upcoming winter. Needless to say with all the rain we received the hay crop is phenomenal this year! This week Andree and Jill are heading out to Bonanza in Quebec. We know they will have fun catching up with everyone in the East!

Frank's Birthday

• Busy Weekend - Birthday & Baptism
We had a very busy weekend on the 19th of June since we celebrated Frank's birthday, had Danika's Baptism and it was Father's Day! Frank had a great birthday party with BBQ ribs cooked by Curtis, cake from us girls and entertainment by Danika! We also had a wonderful baptism celebration at the church in Wilcox. Danika is a very lucky girl to have her Auntie Jill and Auntie Nicole as her Godmothers!

• The Calves Are Beginning to Blossom
The calves at OVHF and Six South are beginning to blossom with all the lush green grass we have this year. Pictured is a Harvie Ricochet daughter out of our donor cow OVHF Duchess 10L. The other heifer calf is SSAL Prairie Fire 7X out of Harvie Traveler. These are only two of the fantastic heifer calves we have on the ground this year. Watch for more pictures to come of our other 2010 females!

• A Wet Spring In SK!
It has been a very challenging month of May in SK this year. Seeding has not progressed in three weeks due to a huge amount of rain. Avonlea as well as Milestone did not escape the wet weather and it set record rainfall amounts. The cattle are on pasture however in the pictures you can see how deep the water is even for our March calves! Pictured is also our Stamina x Northeastern March heifer calf who is standing in a normally dry part of our pasture. We are praying for sunshine and wind to dry up our fields so that we can return to seeding. Our hay crops on the other hand look very promising at both Avonlea and Milestone.
